Molassadoodles

Recipe courtesy of my mom:
1 c. sugar
3/4 c. shortening
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg
2 c. flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. ground cardamom
1/4 tsp. salt
granulated sugar to roll cookies in

Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl combine first four ingredients. Beat at med. speed until well blended. Add dry ingredients. Beat at low speed until soft dough forms (it'll be pretty thick) shape dough into 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-12 minutes until set. Cool completely before storing (if they last that long). Makes 3 dozen.
